Introduction

The next in our series of staff spotlights focuses on Tammy Dance, a Maritime Security Officer deployed for CPA Group at the Port of Brisbane.

Tammy joined us in March 2018 and has a successful 5 year career as a security guard, primarily at Brisbane City Council.

Between her various shifts, study, and looking after 4 children, Tammy is an awesome example of energy and dedication.

What is your professional background?

I am a trained security professional and at the moment I work as a Maritime Security officer. I am currently studying a Diploma in Government Security which I am studying externally and will hopefully complete in early 2019.

I also hold qualifications in Occupational First Aid which I obtained through Baseline Training,

Where are you working now?

I am working at Port of Brisbane as a Maritime Security Guard working on a roster including day and  night shifts and weekend work.

What other CPA Group sites have you worked?

I have been deployed at two CS Energy sites – Kogan Creek and Wivenhoe.

What are your primary responsibilities?

My duties are pretty standard for a security guard, Access control, protecting vessels and landside and other restricted zones.

My work often involves security for visiting cruise ships, which is highly visible to the public so communication and customer service are critical.

What do you find most challenging or fulfilling in your role?

The role includes working for multiple clients – Port of Brisbane and many other maritime clients in the wider Brisbane Port.

The move into maritime security after previous security roles involves different powers under the federal legislation which has required further training and professional development which I have enjoyed.

In my role I deal with public the but also vessel crews, contractors and clients so I need to be flexible, with good communication, always professional. I try to always remember that I am a representative of CPA Group, wearing the CPA Group uniform.

Sometimes I have to deal with people who may not be respectful, so self control and maintaining professionalism is important at those times.

I do like the mix of shifts, it adds variety which I enjoy.

I also am enjoying growing within the CPA Group!

And what do you do in your spare time?

I am a single mum with 4 children aged between 9 and 21 which can be a bit of a juggle! I am also studying. If I get any spare time I do like to keep up with what is going on in the industry and staying refreshed

Any hobbies?

My children are my hobby!

What do you think your manager would say about you?

He would make a joke! I think he is happy with my work performance.
