Kevin Waterman sat as a judge for the Breathing Apparatus (BA) Search and Rescue Competition, held at the BHP site in Olympic Dam. Each year this event rotates from Adelaide to one of the team sites, such as those in Olympic Dam and Broken Hill.

It’s the fourth year Mr Waterman has judged the competition, having done BA for three years, and industrial rescue for one. The teams this year were Cadia Valley Operation, Carrapateena, Challenger, Prominent Hill, and two teams from Olympic Dam.

The weekend's tight contest saw BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam 1 crowned top emergency response team with a score of 85.9% overall, while Challenger came in second with wins in firefighting, theory and road crash rescue. Olympic Dam 2 were the best on the day in firefighting and newcomers Cadia took out the award for search and rescue. Rounding out the six teams were Prominent Hill and Carrapateena.

The BA Search and Rescue Competition is a terrific networking event, and means to correspond with various teams and their respective supervisors from multiple sites. Aside from this, it is also a great opportunity to see how different teams operate in their own different ways, all under the same scenario.
